Does drinking water help acne? The honest answer
Drinking enough water supports general health and may help dry skin feel better, but extra glasses do not unclog pores or replace proven acne treatment.

When I had acne, I wanted one habit that could explain everything.
Water was an appealing candidate. It was cheap, healthy, and much easier to understand than follicles, hormones, oil, inflammation, and the patience required by a real acne routine. If another glass could wash the spots away from the inside, I was ready to become extremely hydrated.
Over the last 15 years, I have helped more than 100,000 people with problem skin. The water question still appears constantly, usually from someone who feels they have failed because they cannot drink three heroic litres every day.
You have not failed. Acne is not a hydration test.
The short answer
Drinking enough water supports your general health. If you normally drink very little, increasing your intake may improve some measurements of skin hydration.
There is no good evidence that extra water clears acne. Water does not dissolve a plug inside a pore, reduce acne inflammation like a proven treatment, or switch off oil glands.
Drink when you are thirsty, drink more in heat or during exercise, and follow medical advice if you have a condition that affects fluid needs. Then treat acne as acne.
Why the idea sounds convincing
Skin contains water, so "more water equals better skin" feels logical. The missing detail is that your body regulates fluid tightly. A glass of water does not travel directly to a pimple like a tiny internal face wash.
Acne begins in the pilosebaceous follicle. Oil and shed skin cells contribute to a microscopic plug. Inflammation and the follicle microbiome join the process. Drinking water does not target those steps in a meaningful, demonstrated way.
That does not make water unimportant. It means healthy hydration and acne treatment are different jobs.
What water research can tell us
A small 2007 study[1] compared extra mineral water with extra tap water in healthy women. Some skin physiology measurements changed, including hydration-related measures, but the study did not involve people being treated for acne and did not measure acne clearance.
This distinction matters. A study can suggest that fluid intake influences the skin surface without proving that water treats clogged follicles.
The practical reading is modest: if you are habitually under-hydrated, drinking a sensible amount may help the body and perhaps the feel of the skin. Once you are adequately hydrated, forcing down more water has no established acne advantage.
Dehydrated skin is not the same as acne
Dehydrated skin describes low water content in the outer layer. It can feel tight, rough, dull, or surprisingly oily. Acne describes clogged and inflamed follicles.
You can have both at once. This often happens when an acne routine is too aggressive:
- strong cleanser morning and night
- daily acids before the skin has adapted
- no moisturiser because the face is oily
- hot water and scrubbing
- several spot treatments layered on the same area

What treats acne
The 2024 acne guidelines[2] strongly recommend treatments including benzoyl peroxide and topical retinoids. They also conditionally recommend salicylic acid and azelaic acid, among other options, depending on the person and severity.
That is not a reason to use everything at once. It is a reason to choose a simple plan that addresses the follicle.
For mild acne, a calm starting routine might look like this:
- Cleanse gently. Remove sunscreen, makeup, sweat, and surface debris without chasing a squeaky finish.
- Use one acne active consistently. Salicylic acid can help clogged pores. Benzoyl peroxide can help inflamed acne. A clinician may recommend a retinoid or another treatment.
- Moisturise when needed. Acne-prone skin still has a barrier.
- Use sunscreen. This matters especially when treatment increases sensitivity or spots leave marks.
Give the routine time. Acne develops before you see it, so daily mirror negotiations are poor science.
How much should you drink?
There is no universal skincare number.
Fluid needs change with body size, food, temperature, activity, pregnancy, medicines, and health conditions. Water also comes from food and other drinks. Clear urine all day is not a beauty achievement.
A useful approach is less dramatic:
- respond to thirst
- drink extra around exercise and heat
- keep water available if you tend to forget
- speak with a clinician if thirst becomes unusual or fluid intake is medically restricted
Do not turn hydration into another perfection contest. A routine you can live with beats a daily challenge that makes you anxious.
When water seems to help
Sometimes people drink more water and their skin improves. That experience can be real without proving water treated the acne.
Perhaps the new habit replaced sugary drinks. Perhaps sleep, meals, and exercise changed at the same time. Perhaps the person also began a treatment that needed six weeks to work. Perhaps the skin surface felt less dry, so they stopped scrubbing it.
Skincare changes rarely arrive alone. That is why changing one meaningful variable at a time is so useful.
The practical takeaway
Drink water because your body needs it, not because your pores owe you clear skin in return.
Adequate hydration may support the skin surface, especially if you were drinking too little. It does not replace treatment for the clogged follicles and inflammation that create acne.
Keep the plan peaceful: sensible fluid intake, gentle cleansing, one suitable acne treatment, moisturiser when the skin asks for it, and enough time to judge the result. Your water bottle can remain part of a healthy day. It does not need a promotion to dermatologist.
