Double cleansing
Also called: Two-step cleansing, Oil cleanse
Double cleansing means using two cleansing steps, usually an oil-based or balm cleanser first and a gentle water-based cleanser second. It is useful for heavy sunscreen or makeup, but not mandatory for everyone.
At a glance
- Best fit: Heavy sunscreen, makeup, water-resistant products, or very oily residue.
- Second cleanse should be gentle; squeaky skin means the routine is too harsh.
- Dry or sensitive skin may prefer one thorough gentle cleanse instead.

The short answer
Double cleansing means cleansing twice: usually an oil-based cleanser or balm first, then a gentle water-based cleanser.
It can be useful if you wear makeup, heavy SPF, or water-resistant sunscreen. It is not a moral achievement. Nobody gets extra skin points for washing twice when once was enough.
Why people do it
The first cleanse helps dissolve oily residue, makeup, and sunscreen film. The second cleanse removes leftover cleanser and water-soluble debris.
That said, cleanser mildness matters. A cleanser review[1] explains that surfactants can extract skin components and disrupt barrier properties when formulas are too aggressive. So the goal is not maximum removal. The goal is enough removal without leaving your barrier annoyed.
Sunscreen is worth taking seriously. The FDA tells people to apply sunscreen properly and reapply during sun exposure[2]. At night, removing the product comfortably matters because tomorrow's SPF only helps if you are willing to wear it again.
What to do with this term
Double cleanse if:
- you wear makeup
- your sunscreen is water resistant
- your SPF feels heavy or film-forming
- your skin is oily and one cleanse leaves residue
Skip or simplify it if:
- your skin is dry or tight after cleansing
- your rosacea or sensitivity flares
- you do not wear much product during the day
- the second cleanse makes your face squeaky
Clean skin should feel like skin, not a porcelain plate.

Common questions
Do I need to double cleanse every night?
No. Double cleanse when there is something meaningful to remove, such as makeup, heavy SPF, or water-resistant sunscreen. Otherwise one gentle cleanse can be enough.
Can double cleansing cause breakouts?
It can if the first cleanser leaves residue, the second cleanser is harsh, or you scrub too much. Cleansing should leave skin clean and comfortable, not tight.
