Cosmetic camouflage
Also called: Camouflage makeup, Corrective makeup, Colour-correcting makeup, Medical camouflage
Cosmetic camouflage means using pigmented makeup to make visible redness, pigmentation, scars, or other skin colour differences less noticeable without treating their cause.
At a glance
- Camouflage changes appearance immediately; it does not treat the underlying skin condition.
- Green corrector can visually neutralise redness, while other tones are chosen for different colour changes.
- For reactive skin, easy application and gentle removal matter as much as coverage.
- Wanting to cover a visible skin sign is a personal choice, not a medical requirement.

The short answer
Cosmetic camouflage is the use of pigmented makeup to make a visible skin colour difference less noticeable.
It may cover erythema, pigmentation, post-acne marks, scars, or uneven tone. The change is immediate and visual. It does not treat the cause.
How the term is used
“Camouflage” usually means more targeted coverage than ordinary makeup. It can involve a corrector, concealer, foundation, or powder chosen to reduce contrast between an area and the surrounding skin.
For redness, green pigment can visually neutralise some red tones. Chromium Oxide Greens, also called CI 77288, is one regulated green colour additive that may appear in cosmetics. The AAD notes that green-tinted concealer can camouflage rosacea redness[2].
Colour correction is optional. Some people prefer normal foundation, some use camouflage only for photographs or work, and some wear no coverage.
Why it can matter
Visible skin changes can affect confidence and social comfort. A systematic review of 18 studies found improvements in quality-of-life measures after cosmetic camouflage for visible skin conditions[1]. The studies varied, so camouflage is not a psychological cure. It can still be a practical tool with an immediate effect.
Mads's practical read
Choose a product that gives enough coverage without demanding heavy rubbing or difficult removal. That balance is especially important for rosacea and sensitive skin.
The full rosacea makeup guide covers formula choice, green correction, tools, and gentle cleansing. Persistent or changing redness still belongs with a qualified dermatologist; makeup can cover a sign, but it cannot diagnose it.

Common questions
What is cosmetic camouflage?
It is makeup used to reduce the visible contrast of redness, pigmentation, scars, or another colour difference. The effect is visual and temporary.
Is cosmetic camouflage a treatment?
No. It can support confidence and quality of life, but it does not treat the vessels, pigment process, inflammation, or scarring underneath.
What colour concealer covers redness?
Green is commonly used to neutralise the look of red areas. Use a small amount and choose a complete formula that your skin tolerates.
