Neurogenic inflammation

Neurogenic inflammation is inflammation shaped by signals released from sensory nerves. In skin, those signals can affect blood vessels and immune cells, contributing to warmth, redness, burning, swelling, or itch.

The short answer

Neurogenic inflammation means that sensory nerves help start or amplify inflammation.

In skin, nerve signals can affect nearby blood vessels and immune cells. The result may include warmth, redness, burning, swelling, pain, or itch. The term describes a mechanism, not a diagnosis.

How the nerve-skin conversation works

Sensory nerves do more than report discomfort to the brain. They can release messenger molecules called neuropeptides into nearby tissue.

A review of skin neurogenic inflammation[1] describes how neuropeptides can influence blood vessels and encourage immune-cell activity. Channels such as TRPV1 and TRPA1 help sensory nerves recognise heat, cold, capsaicin, and other chemical signals.

The response can become a loop:

  1. A trigger activates sensory nerves.
  2. Nerves release local messengers.
  3. Blood vessels widen and immune cells respond.
  4. Skin feels warm, red, stingy, painful, or itchy.

This is why "the nerves are involved" does not mean that symptoms are imaginary. Nerves are part of real skin biology.

Why it appears in rosacea guidance

Rosacea research describes close communication between facial nerves, blood vessels, and immune cells. A tissue study[2] found changes in sensory nerves, vessels, mast cells, and genes involved in neurovascular and neuroimmune signalling.

Heat, capsaicin, alcohol, stress, exercise, and cold can activate relevant pathways. That overlap helps explain why very different experiences can end in the same temporary flush.

Neurogenic inflammation does not mean that every burning face has "neurogenic rosacea." Contact dermatitis, barrier damage, allergy, infection, and other conditions can also cause redness or pain.

What to do with the term

Use it to understand the biology, not to self-diagnose a subtype.

For daily care:

  • avoid adding friction or strong actives during a hot flare
  • lower repeatable heat triggers where practical
  • keep prescribed treatment steady
  • record patterns without building a fear-based trigger list
