Can you get sunburned through a window?

Ordinary glass blocks most UVB but can let UVA through. Understand the difference between sunburn and repeated exposure, and choose practical protection at home or in the car.

I want sun protection to fit the day you actually have. A desk beside a bright window and a short walk through a sunny kitchen deserve different amounts of thought. You can check your regular exposure without turning every patch of daylight into another skincare task.

Ordinary closed glass blocks most UVB, while the amount of UVA that passes through depends on the glass.[1] A typical sunburn is therefore less likely behind a window, but “indoors” does not mean that all ultraviolet radiation has disappeared. An open window is a different situation: the glass no longer sits between your skin and the sunlight.

What the glass can tell you

A 2013 scientific review found that commercial and vehicle glass blocks most UVB. Laminated glass generally provides better UVA protection than tempered glass, and window films can improve protection.[1] That gives you a useful starting point, rather than one percentage to apply to every building.

At home, look for the window specification if you need a precise answer. The description may mention a coating, laminate or added film. Ask what the finished glass system blocks in the UVA and UVB ranges. “Tinted” or “energy efficient” is not a measured UVA protection figure.

Notice where sunlight reaches you during the hours you use the room. A chair that is shaded in the morning may sit in direct light later. This is a practical check of your setup, not a way to measure your personal UV dose. There is no universal safe distance from every window in the evidence discussed here.

What the car study measured

In a 2016 study, a researcher tested 29 cars from 15 manufacturers, with model years from 1990 to 2014. Windshields blocked an average of 96% of UVA. Driver-side windows blocked 71% on average, ranging from 44% to 96%; only four side windows blocked more than 90%.[2]

These were measurements of glass protection in a particular sample. The study did not follow drivers to measure their skin changes, and its averages do not describe every car sold today. Do not assume that your side window performs like your windshield, or that a darker-looking window has a particular protection factor.

If you drive for work or spend hours commuting, ask the manufacturer about the specific vehicle and windows. Include any replacement glass or aftermarket film in that question. It is more useful than trying to identify protection from a photograph of the car.

Less burning does not mean no UVA exposure

The Skin Cancer Foundation explains that UVB is mainly responsible for sunburn, while UVA contributes to tanning and skin ageing and can also cause sunburn. Both contribute to skin cancer risk. Glass filters most UVB but can transmit UVA.[3] A lack of redness is not a test showing that no UV reached you.

This distinction matters most as you think about repeated exposure, such as sitting beside the same sunny window or driving regularly. The information does not establish a personal countdown until damage occurs. It helps you choose sensible protection for a routine you repeat.

Make protection easy to use

For regular exposure near sunny windows, the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends protection that can include clothing, sunscreen and UV-protective film.[3] Start with what you can comfortably keep doing. A sleeve that covers the arm beside the car window may be easier to remember than another product on the desk.

Choose sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection. Ireland’s medicines and cosmetics regulator, HPRA, advises looking for broad-spectrum protection and the UVA logo on European products.[4] The UVA circle guide explains the symbol and its limits.

Follow the sunscreen’s application and reapplication instructions. HPRA stresses using enough product, limiting sun exposure and reapplying regularly.[4] For more detail, see how often to reapply sunscreen. Build your plan around your exposure and the label rather than a claim that every indoor day is identical.

Use the room and the window too

Try a blind or a different chair position to keep direct sun off your skin. Check again later in the day to see whether the sun has moved onto your seat. You are adjusting the place you spend time, not trying to make your whole home dark.

For persistent exposure, documented UV-protective film is another option. The window review describes films as a way to improve the glass’s UV protection.[1] Ask an installer about compatibility with your glazing and, for a car, the applicable visibility and tinting rules. A product’s appearance alone is not enough to judge its UV performance.

When to ask for medical advice

Some medicines can cause photosensitivity reactions after light exposure. DermNet describes reactions that can resemble an exaggerated sunburn or an itchy rash.[5] If your skin repeatedly becomes painful, itchy or blistered after time by a window, ask a clinician to assess it rather than diagnosing the cause yourself.

Mention medicines, topical products and when the symptoms appear. If a medicine has a sun-sensitivity warning, ask the prescriber or pharmacist what protection you need; do not change a prescribed treatment on your own. A known photosensitive condition also deserves an individual plan.

A sunny window is not a vitamin D plan

The NIH explains that UVB does not penetrate window glass to produce vitamin D in the skin.[6] Warmth and brightness do not tell you which ultraviolet wavelengths have reached you. The guide to sunscreen and vitamin D covers that separate question.

I would focus on the window you sit beside most often, check the available protection and choose a few habits you can repeat. That might mean a blind, clothing, broad-spectrum sunscreen or a discussion about the glass. You do not need a complicated facial routine to make a practical sun-protection decision.
